MKVToolNix is developed by Montz Bunkus, and it is free-of-cost and open-sourced, which means it can be used by anyone as long as the user wants to use it. The software is a set of utility tools made for Matroska in its media container format, including the MKVMerge. The utility software is available for several platforms, which includes all UNIX based platforms, Microsoft Windows, and macOS. These tools are present in a GitHub repository and can be edited and used from there. They are written in C++ and available in 20 languages, which makes them useful software worldwide. It comes with a General Public License version2 (GPLv2).
The specific function that the utility tools under MKVToolNix have is altering, inspecting, and creating Matroska format files on Windows and Linux. These tools are mkvinfo, mkvpropedit, mkvmerge, mkvextract, mmg, and others. What these tools are used to do to Matroska files is what the OGMTools do to OGM format files and then some. The tools are used to treat several individual files like they are concentrated binarily in a big single input file.
Features
- Matroska is an advanced file format that can support several features in a video file, such as multiple audio streams in the same file, subtitles, DVD-like menus, and even more without any problem.
- Another advantage that the file format has is its capability to offer high image and video quality without being too heavy on the system or taking up too much space.
- MKVToolNix is easy to use; it can edit the files of Matroska format. If you open a file with that format in the software, you can use it to display and add subtitles and audio tracks into the video, or you can also use it to check the integrity of the file simply.
- If you are a regular Matroska file user, then MKVToolNix is the best set of utility tools out there for you. It has a straightforward interface with a fast and intuitive working method.

Debian packages
I provide i386 and Amd64 binaries for MKVToolNix for Debian 10 'Buster' (the current stable) and 11 'Bullseye' (the upcoming stable).
You first have to import my public GPG key because all of my pools are signed. Run this once: sudo wget -O /usr/share/keyrings/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg https://mkvtoolnix.download/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg
You can access the packages by adding the lines below to a file such as /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mkvtoolnix.download.list
:
Version | APT source |
---|---|
Debian 10 (aka 'Buster') | deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg] https://mkvtoolnix.download/debian/ buster main deb-src [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg] https://mkvtoolnix.download/debian/ buster main |
Debian 11 (aka 'Bullseye') | deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg] https://mkvtoolnix.download/debian/ bullseye main deb-src [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.gpg] https://mkvtoolnix.download/debian/ bullseye main |
Now simply run sudo apt update
followed by sudo apt install mkvtoolnix mkvtoolnix-gui
.
If updating the package lists fails, make sure you have the package apt-transport-https
installed.
A note on compiling for Debian 11: you have to install the clang
package for the clang compiler which is used due to a bug in the gcc version shipped with Debian 11.
